Tonight, I did something that I haven’t done in ages.
I finished reading a new book, all in one sitting.
This used to be a common occurrence for me when I was younger. But as I got older, and college classes took over my life, I lost this part of me.
It’s good to be back.
I had originally started out doing other things that evening. Watching TV (Criminal Minds, in case you were wondering). Homework (haven’t done it for a while). But then I saw a Facebook post from a friend, saying that she had just read Wonder by R.J. Palacio, a book which was also recently made into a movie. She had just read the book, and was currently watching the movie for the first time.
Huh, I thought. I don’t think I have read a book in a while. That’s not right. I must fix this.
And with that, I downloaded Wonder onto my Kindle and began to read.
At first, I was half-reading as I continued to watch TV (homework had long ago fallen by the wayside). But not too long after starting the story, I paused the TV and continued to read. And read. And read.
For well over three hours I read. Was I wearing my glasses? No, and I regret that decision. But I was so engrossed in the story that I couldn’t be bothered to get up and grab my glasses from my night stand by my bed.
Binge-reading an entire book in one go used to be such a natural thing for me. Doing it again felt like coming home. Ah, it’s good to be back!
After I finished the story, heart happy and eyes sore, I realized that it was about 1:00am. I sat up on the couch – having laid down somewhere about 1/3 into the story – and took a deep breath. It was like coming back down to earth after being swept away by something glorious. I know I may seem a little dramatic, but it’s hard to put these feelings into words. Not that I regret going to college and nursing school, but I do regret having strayed away from reading for so long. I’ve read bits and pieces here and there, but I haven’t taken the time to relax and lose myself in a story.
Btw, I shall probably write a book review of Wonder in the very near future. Loved the story, and can’t wait to see the movie!
And with that, I shall go to bed. I have church in the morning (well, in a few hours, I guess, since it’s a little after 1:00am) and should get some bit of sleep.
I do hope that this post makes sense to someone other than myself. I am very tired, and should probably wait to post this until later after I’ve had a chance to proof-read. But I wont. 🙂
Time well spent, Dear Heart.
